Diabetic Health fitness support

Those who have type 1 or 2 Diabetes to help each other about diet, exercise and controlling diabetes. It is almost a year ago I was diagnosed with type 2 and still trying to understand all can do and not
jadesfire8 9 months ago
I have to admit over the past 6 months since the numbing in my hand I have not done much in exercise. Luckily my BG's have been good but I have put weight on. It would be good to have some buddies to encourage each other in loosing some weight before christmas.

How is everyone else going? Soon I am getting my A1c's done, not looking forward to my cholestrol check though.

Sorry haven't been on for a while. Since Jan this year I've had problems with numbness in my left hand and been going through test to see what has caused the problem. I had an MRI last week but won't know the results until I see the specialist on Tuesday.
Diabetes was ruled out as I've had my BG's under control. In the last months I've lost 2kgs. Which I needed to as my weight had gone slightly over the healthy weight for my height.

How and the rest of you doing?
Mando36 3 months ago
Well I've been trying to gain weight because I'm under weight I should be at 189lbs but I'm not I feel that I'm under weight because I weight 145lbs.  I tslk to my doc. And he told me to eat more so thsts whst I'm doing. I really would like to reach 189lbs before the summer plus I like that healthy feeling. So if any one has tips on gaining weight I would like to know. As far as that goose I'm working on having better health and living long.

Once upon a time I had that problem of trying to put weight on.  Use to always burn more calories than I ate.  to put on weight I would just heaps of junk food which turned out bad for my cholestrol.  Have you tried the protein shakes that body builders use.  Some of the shakes out their for body building don't have too much sugar in them.  You could try an eat some of the foods that have good fats in that might help put on some weight, like avocadoes, nuts.

I've been getting painful numbness and pins and needles in my left hand too. Its driving me nuts. I've got an app with my GP 8/2/13. Hope yours isn't too much of a problem. I've also got "Chiari Malformation" which is a condition of the brain and always thought the pains and numbness was that. My diabetes when i checked it yesterday was 4.5 it was 10.6 a few months ago. I've always thought diabetes is very difficult to get right.

Let's get this group going!

Hi there! How are you? Feel free to introduce yourself, same with everyone else.
I've been learning about diabetes and trying to be good but exercise is always something I lack motivation for. So I created this group with the hope of helping each other and answering any questions we had about our health. Also when 1st started out I didn't know much at all about diabetes and wanted to avoid ever having to take medication.
dkeyes055 9 months ago
hi , I'm a diabetic also controlled by medication and diet. Diabetes will destroy every system in your body if uncontrolled. It's hard to exercise if your over weight. I started by walking short distances 10 minutes down the road and back. Now I am up to a mile. when it's too hot I walk Wal Mart Superstore in a circle from one side to the other. If I walk outdoors I walk in the early morning. This site is a blessing to me. I do the novice exercise and can get through all of them except the ones that require u to get on the floor. I do this because I need to regain my health. I want to be around to see my gran kids all graduate from high school.

Sounds good that you are at least doing some exercises there and the grandkids great motivation. Walking can be great for helping keep weight down and not putting too much stress on the body. The weather is getting nicer here. I live in a very hilly area so that gives a good work out. I'm still just in the healthy weight range for my height but my belly is not so great and I have to get back to doing something about it. I have back problems so some exercises are out for me. I can walk for a bit but eventually pain grows. Swimming I sometimes do but every time it's winter I don't want to go.
What exercises do any of you do that you enjoy? How do the rest of you keep yourselves motivated?

I don't know too much about Crohns not sure if any one else knows much. This is some of what I found on the net.

Which foods should I avoid with a Crohn's disease diet plan?

The foods that trigger symptoms differ for each person with Crohn's disease.least some of these listed foods will trigger your symptoms:

alcohol (mixed drinks, beer, wine)
butter, mayonnaise, margarine, oils
carbonated beverages
coffee, tea, chocolate
corn husks
dairy products (if lactose intolerant)
fatty foods (fried foods)
foods high in fiber
gas-producing foods (lentils, beans, legumes, cabbage, broccoli, onions)
nuts and seeds (peanut butter, other nut butters)
raw fruits
raw vegetables
red meat and pork
spicy foods
whole grains and bran
Are there benefits to gain from omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics in relation to Crohn's disease?

Are there benefits to gain from omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics in relation to Crohn's disease?

Numerous studies using fish oil and flaxseed oil suggest an important role for good fats in the inflammatory response that characterizes IBD. The studies, though, are inconsistent on whether or not omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect with IBD. If you want to add omega-3 fatty acid supplements to your diet, talk with your doctor first.

Other studies are just beginning to examine the possibility that probiotics or "good" bacteria may be beneficial in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. More studies are needed, though, to make it clear whether or not these supplements can aid in healing the intestine in IBD.

Try: Bananas, white bread, white rice, and cheese (if you're not lactose intolerant), Gatorade and Crystal Light diluted with water, fruit juices, applesauce, smooth peanut butter, bland soft foods, crackers made with white flour, plain cereals, refined pastas, broth, canned varieties of fruit, cooked vegetables, potatoes without skin, eating broiled or steamed fish (e.g. herring, salmon, halibut, flounder, swordfish or pollack), using canola and olive oils, small & frequent meals, nutritional supplements if there is weight loss and if your doctor approves vitamins and mineral supplements.

I hope all had a great Christmas and New Year. How did you all go with the eating doing the celebrating period?

I couldn't resist the hot bread rolls or baked potato with our cream. I find potatoes are one of the foods that increases my BG's especially when I change them from their original form.

Any type 1s in this group?
jadesfire8 11-01-2012 01:58
I think there is a couple. I'm type 2 keeping it under control with diet and exercise.

I create this group as I thought we could help each other out with information on diabetes as I was diagnoised a year ago.

At the moment need to check with the doctor as I have had numbness in my hand since late December. Need to check if pinched nerve as B.G's have been fine.
dannydur 11-01-2012 03:28
Wich hand? I had numbness in my leg and left arm and my endo gave me cymbalta
jadesfire8 11-01-2012 04:23
In the left hand. Of course my work is data entry and that is making it difficult.

How is your leg now?
dannydur 11-01-2012 18:15
my leg is great now the tingles stopped for the most part it was unbearable like walking on pins and needles all day

I use to be that way problems putting weight on, but back in those days I was really active so I was always burning off more than the calories I was eating.

Maybe if you increase some of the food with the good fat like nuts and avocados, I know protein also helps bulk up the body. some of the body builder protein shakes don't have much sugar in them.

I remember last year when I was told I had type 2 diabetes I was angry and keep saying why do I have it when I am not over weight? It's not fair. I thought I have to not worry about that and do what I have to do so I can put off having to take medication and injections.

I have to keep reminding myself when I get off track that medication injections or worse can happen if I am not responsible. What do the rest of you do to help get yourself on track? My A1c results is my other way last reading was 5.8
Elle C. 09-12-2011 22:34
My inner child says that it is unfair that the very thing that helps (insulin) puts weight on. I'm not doing anything else now that the children and their spouses have moved away so I have the time to take care of me. This site is a lot cheaper than driving 34 miles to town and back and the exercises are ones I can do at home without buying equipment. Other than being stuck with the diabetes, I don't have to allow it to get the better of me.

Hi all,i'am type 1 diabetic and have been for 5 years now,I to am of a normal wait and have never been over weight and have been very active, so being told i'd got diabetes was a shock, it's only been in the last year that i've started to look after myself and started eating more suitable foods, i find that your head can become bombarded with what to and not to eat by many people's and book's.In general we all know what's good to eat and what's not good to eat, i eat alot of high carb foods potatoes, pasta for when going down the gym and high protein foods, fish e.t.c on a regular basic's as well as salad's, i have felt so much better since starting down gym, this has also helped with b.g level's , which before have never been brilliant, anyone with type 1 or 2 , just keep at it down the gym, you will notice many changes.....

I found doing walking a bit each day has really made a difference to my waist measurements. It was surprising that I had lost 3cm off my waist without doing a hard cardio workout. Plus I was also watching what ate and kept an eye on my BG's. The only other excerise I did where light weights or resistance bands.
hannahnmdent 10-10-2011 12:35
Hiya,
I have also found walking great, it has reduced my waist, increased my eastrogen levels and my ability to use the insulin I create(insulin resistance is my downfall). Now I am running as well as walking which I thought impossible and I am up for my first 10K run in two weeks....Well done on the 3cm loss, its inspiring when you hear other people are a sucess.

I also have a problem with my weight, in my case i need to put some weight on, I'm 45 5 feet 10 inches tall and weigh in at 55kg. I want to do this in a healthy way instead of having lard butties for breakfast, any ideas?
jadesfire8 17-11-2011 23:14
Hi Hannah,

How did your 10k run go? Congratulations and loosing the 3cm too!

I've just been getting over a cold so I have been bad exercise wise. My friend took me walking after work and where we work there is river and parklands so I enjoyed it and we decided we would do that more often after work. Both helping each other out.

wow 176lbs and its great you have a friend to workout with. It helps when you have an exercise buddy. If you feel slack and don't want to go and you know you are working out with a friend you feel if you don't turn up you are letting them down. so you make the effort to go.
